Stage One - Grow and Cultivate

Botanicals Step 1 - Grow and Cultivate

Making sure your plant grows to term is a vital step in any botanical’s workflow. Soil must be properly monitored for the correct pH and plants must receive the appropriate amount of water to get the most out of each seed.

One of the most important considerations is humidity, not only for the overall health of the plant, but also at each stage of the plant’s growth. Managing humidity levels will be different for each stage. With humidity levels ranging between 60 and 75% for all stages (clone room, vegetative room, flowering room, and the final stages of flowering), Cole-Parmer® offers a wide range of humidity products from thermohygrometers to psychrometers, hygrometers, and dew point meters, as well as TraceableLive® cloud-based monitoring. Our expertise in humidity monitoring will make the challenge just a little easier for you.

Stage Two — ExtractionBotanicals Step 2 - Extraction

Solvent extraction for soluble components of plants is one of the safest forms of extraction and is one of the least expensive options available.

Botanical Extraction is placing a solid (plant) in a solvent in order to remove soluble (dissolvable) components, similar to making coffee or tea.
Extraction techniques are used to separate the components and remove them from the plant matrix. Various methods can divide plant material into parts, or extracts, that contain different chemicals. Extraction techniques are often used to isolate specific desirable compounds or a producer may seek to create a single extract with many desirable compounds; sometimes called whole plant extracts.

Stage Three — Analysis

Botanicals Step 3 - Analysis

Downstream quality control is a must in any regulated market, especially for botanicals and agriculture.

Plant material can only have a certain amount of pesticide residue to comply with certain state and federal regulations. This will require the use of chromatography equipment and a pesticide extraction technique. Material will also need to be tested for microbial growth, so the product is safe for sale. Distillation can be done to the oil to isolate certain compounds that are of interest to a research scientist, as this allows for the study of CBD, THC, or the exact Terpene of interest. Specific Terpenes can also be added to provide the desired effect of the cannabinoid. Determining the amount of metals present in the plant material is also often required by state and federal authorities. Cole-Parmer will be able to help offer a product for whatever testing you need to perform on your finished product or plant.

Stage Four — Storage

Botanicals Step 4 - Storage

When it comes to plant material and essential oils, keeping your finished product at certain temperatures plays a critical role, from transport to a lab, or when it arrives at its final destination for sale.

Keeping the plant in a cool, dry place away from sunlight is of the utmost importance. Light can quickly degrade cannabinoids and a temperature 70 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, is a perfect breeding ground for mildew, mold, and other forms of unwanted bacteria.
For short term storage, keep your product in a cool, dry location at a moisture range of no greater than 50% relative humidity. For longer term storage, a freezer can be used, as long as the container is properly sealed. A desiccant or desiccator can also be utilized to keep the material at this relative humidity range.
